# The first morning in a new unit: a round of every lock

Taking over a unit on Alfaç III, Casa Pau or Derramador? Keys rarely all come back from the last tenant. A door-by-door round for day one, and what a locksmith can and cannot do about each.

Ibi has six industrial estates: Alfaç, Alfaç II, Alfaç III (the largest), Casa Pau, Derramador and Retiro-Casanova. Between them they hold more than 550 companies, and units change tenant all the time. The new tenant gets a bunch of keys. The question is who else still has one.

## Who may have kept keys

The previous tenant and their staff, past and present. The landlord. Cleaners, maintenance firms, the alarm company. A former manager. Keys to units travel in car glove boxes and lockers, and they are rarely all returned.

## The round, door by door

Walk the unit with the bunch of keys and a notebook, and look at each of these:

1. **The staff door.** The one people use every day, and the first to change.
2. **The office.** Often a separate lock, and where documents and a safe live.
3. **Internal stores and cages.** Tool rooms, stock cages, a locked area for finished goods.
4. **Padlocks.** On containers, on the gate of the plot, on fuel or chemical stores.
5. **The manual lock of the loading door.** Many sectional and roller doors have a cylinder or a bolt for when the motor is off.
6. **The safe**, if there is one, and who knows its code.

Write down which key opens which door. Anything with no key at all is worth knowing before you need it.

## What a locksmith does with that list

Every cylinder and padlock on that list can be changed, and the safe can be opened and recoded. That is [the work done on business premises](https://locksmithibi.es/commercial-locksmith-ibi/). What is not: motors and springs on sectional doors, welding, gates and grilles, alarms and cameras. Those go to the installer or a metalworker.

## Cameras are not locks

In 2017 the town hall installed camera surveillance across the industrial area, along with fibre and new lighting. Cameras watch the streets. Your doors are still what keeps people out of the unit. If one has already been tried, start with [repairs after a break-in](https://locksmithibi.es/burglary-repair-ibi/).

## And the people coming to work in it

A new unit often means people arriving from elsewhere to set it up, renting flats in town for the first weeks. If one of them is shut out at night, here is [what to do on a work trip to Ibi](https://locksmithibi.es/blog/locked-out-of-a-rented-flat-on-a-work-trip/).

Ready to change the locks of the unit?

Staff doors, offices, stores and padlocks, changed around your hours. No welding or metalwork.
