Where you are

Four kinds of address, four kinds of door

Ibi sits around 800 metres up, on the slope below the Teixereta, between the Santa Lucía and San Miguel hills. The town, the countryside and the estates each bring a different door to the call, and it helps to say which one you are at.

The Casco Antiguo

The oldest streets, round the Church of the Transfiguration, the 17th-century Llotja and the Casa Gran: family houses on the slope of the hill, with older doors and older locks.

The boom-year barrios

The town more than tripled between 1960 and 1981. Blocks of flats with a street door, a staircase and a flat door on each landing. Changing a cylinder in a flat.

The partides

Farmhouses and chalets out in Biscoi, els Plans, la Devesa and the rest: gates, sheds and front doors a long way from a street name. How those doors are opened.

The estates

Alfaç I to III, Casa Pau, Derramador and Retiro-Casanova. Staff doors, offices and stores that have to open for the morning shift. Work on units and shops.

Parts list

Find the part that matches your door

Each part leads to a page about that job alone: how it is done in Ibi, what you can do while you wait and what to say on the phone. The phone is answered 24 hours a day; planned work is booked in working hours.

The town in figures

A town that made toys, then flats, then everything in plastic

  • 24,500people on the register in 2025, the most ever (INE)
  • ×3growth from 6,129 people in 1960 to 19,846 in 1981
  • 550+companies on six industrial estates

Payá Hermanos opened in Ibi in 1905 and is counted as Spain’s first toy maker. The factories that followed drew newcomers by the thousand, and the town grew round them: about a third of the floor area built in Ibi dates from the 1960s and 1970s. Today the same estates make moulds, plastic parts and metal work.

That history is why the calls look the way they do. Flats that have passed through several owners, where nobody knows who kept a key. Units that change tenant. And people who come for work, from other towns and other countries, renting a flat for a few weeks. They are served in English as easily as in Spanish. Who answers the phone.

Questions

What people in Ibi ask before ringing

Do you come out to a mas in the partides, or only into town?

Out to all of them: every one of the 23 partides, from Biscoi and els Plans to la Devesa and Sant Pasqual, as well as the town, the six industrial estates, and Castalla, Onil and Tibi.

While you are here, can you make me a spare key?

No. This business does not cut, copy or supply keys of any kind, and does nothing with car keys, remotes or ignitions. With a car, the job is opening a locked door and nothing more.

Is the price settled before you start?

Yes. Once the lock has been seen, the price is agreed with you before any work begins, and nothing is touched until you say yes. Payment by cash, card or Bizum.

I am in Ibi for work and do not speak Spanish. Will that be a problem?

No. The call, the WhatsApp messages, the options, the price and the invoice can all be in English, or in Spanish if you prefer.

Do you work on the industrial estates as well as in homes?

Yes, on all six: Alfaç, Alfaç II, Alfaç III, Casa Pau, Derramador, Retiro-Casanova. Staff doors, offices and padlocked stores are opened and their locks changed. Gates, grilles and shutters that need welding are a metalworker’s job, not ours.

Guides

Written for Ibi’s calendar, flats and estates

  • When it cannot wait A small child on the other side of the door

A toddler has turned the key or the thumb-turn, or the door has swung shut with a baby in the cot. When to ring 112, when to ring a locksmith, and how to keep a child calm through a closed door.

  • Work and the estates The first morning in a new unit: a round of every lock

Taking over a unit on Alfaç III, Casa Pau or Derramador? Keys rarely all come back from the last tenant. A door-by-door round for day one, and what a locksmith can and cannot do about each.

  • Moving in Where a safe can be anchored in a flat from the boom years

About a third of Ibi’s built floor area dates from the 1960s and 70s. In flats of that age, inside walls are often thin brick partitions, and a safe bolted to one is not much safer than a safe standing loose.
