Why it gets booked

Six reasons a lock gets changed in Ibi

  • You have just bought. Almost every home sold in Ibi is second-hand: 73 of the 74 sales in the third quarter of 2024. What to check when you move in.
  • You have just moved into a rented flat and the landlord agrees to a new cylinder.
  • A set of keys has gone missing, or somebody who had one should not any more.
  • The cylinder is stiff or grinds, or the key only turns at the second try.
  • Something got into it. After Els Enfarinats, flour and egg end up in more keyholes than you would think: cleaning a lock after 28 December.
  • A child or a cupboard: a lock on an inside door. Locks for the presents before 6 January.

Cylinders, explained in plain English

Most front doors in Spain use a euro cylinder: the brass or nickel barrel that the key goes into, held by one long screw through the edge of the door. Changing it is quick and leaves the rest of the lock in place.

Cylinders differ in what they resist. A basic one can be opened by techniques burglars know: bumping, picking, or snapping it where it sticks out of the door. Anti-bump and anti-snap cylinders are built against those, and a flush fit with no part sticking out matters as much as the cylinder itself. For the strongest grades, guard plates and reinforced locks after a forced entry, see the break-in page.

Multipoint locks

When you have to lift the handle to lock the door

Multipoint locks throw bolts at several points along the edge of the door. When the door drops a little on its hinges, or the frame moves with the seasons, the bolts stop meeting their holes, and the handle has to be forced up before the key will turn. Ibi’s winters are colder than the coast’s, and a door that is fine in June can bind in January.

Often the fix is adjusting the strike plates and the hinges rather than a new lock. If the gearbox inside is worn, it is replaced. Doors on units and shops are on the business page; a door that is stuck shut right now is a job for door opening.

Flats of the boom years

Doors in the blocks built between 1960 and 1980

Ibi tripled in size between 1960 and 1981, when the toy factories drew newcomers by the thousand, and about a third of the town’s built floor area dates from the 1960s and 1970s. Many of those flats have had several owners and several locks since. A flat door may have been reinforced, the cylinder replaced more than once, and the street door of the block changed by the community.

The cylinder of your flat is yours to change. The street door of the block belongs to the community, and its lock is changed when the administrator or the residents ask for it. Questions

Asked before a cylinder is changed

Do I need a whole new lock, or only a new cylinder?

Usually only the cylinder: the part the key goes into. It comes out with one screw on the edge of the door, and changing it means no old key will turn the lock again. The whole lock is replaced only when its mechanism is worn or broken.

Which size of cylinder does my door need?

Send a photo of the edge of the door with the lock plate, and one of the cylinder from outside. The length is measured on the day, so the new one sits flush instead of sticking out.

Can I change the lock of a flat I rent?

Talk to the landlord first: the cylinder belongs to the home, and most rental contracts say who may change it and who keeps a key. Many landlords agree when asked, especially after a lost key.

When is it paid, and how?

The price is agreed before the work starts, once the door has been seen. Payment by cash, card or Bizum, with an invoice in English or Spanish.
